Alongside Milk VFX, Real SFX have won an Emmy in the ‘Outstanding Special Visual Effects in a Supporting Role’ category, for their work on the Sherlock 2015 special, The Abominable Bride. The Creative Arts Emmy Awards honour outstanding artistic and technical achievement in a variety of television program genres, guest performances in weekly series, as well as exceptional work in the animation, reality and documentary categories.

Wales based Real SFX have been providing practical special effects for the TV series Sherlock since it first aired back in 2010.Then returning once again to provide a number of practical special effects for the 2015 special, The Abominable Bride. There were many practical special effects for the episode including explosions, atmospheric effects, bullet hits, shatter glass, water effects and fire effects!

The awards took place in Los Angeles on September 11th, 2016. Danny Hargreaves (Special Effects Supervisor) and his wife Carmela Carrubba (Company Director) attended the awards along with the rest of the Sherlock team. One other Real SFX nominee who was unable to attend the ceremony was Dewi Foulkes (Technician). Other nominees in the category were Hannibal, Better Call Saul, 11.22.63 and the hugely popular The Walking Dead .

Danny Hargreaves said: “We are hugely surprised but utterly thrilled to have won an Emmy for our work on Sherlock. We were up against some hugely talented people who work on very popular programmes, so we’re honoured to have won it. Thanks again to the creative Sherlock production team and of course the the brilliant writing of Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat who continually encourage me to push the the boundaries of what can be done practically.

Carmela Carrubba said: “We were definitely not expecting to win so we couldn't believe it when we heard the result. A lot of work goes into filming a programme such as this so it’s great to see our team being recognised for their work.

It was only a few years ago that we hired Dewi as our Special Effects Apprentice and now he’s an Emmy winner! We work closely with Sgil Cymru to bring new talent into this industry and it’s great to see that our apprentices are forging successful careers following their apprenticeship.
